If you are really serious about your music and want to live your dreams doing what you love, then you
must BRAND yourself. So many artist make the mistake of copying what other artist are doing. You need to build a brand. A brand, basically put, is a consistent message and theme. It’s what you do, and how you look. It is not created on accident, brands take time and consistency to develop.
You MUST be consistent with what kind of music you make in order to brand yourself as an artist. If not, you will have a very hard time separating yourself from millions of other artist out there that are just uploading music to Soundcloud, YouTube, etc.
When you think of E-40, what do you think of? Slaps! He is consistent with the function/mobb kind of music he makes. Yes he makes trap songs like “Yup” every now and then, but the majority of his music is mobb/function type music. Think about Future, he is extremely consistent with the kind of music he makes. You can always count on hearing something to turn up to when you press play. When it comes to your brand, you want to make music that you could see yourself making 10-20 years from now. For the rest of your career. So don’t worry if someone thinks you make too much of the same music, that’s the point! You are branding yourself.
Your brand is also about what you talk about the majority of the time. That is the message that your putting out. It must be consistent. If you are all about getting money, focus on how many ways you can talk about getting money. If you are all about helping people, focus on how many ways you can talk about helping people. If you are all about peace and love, focus on that. If your all about selling drugs, focus on that.. Lol. I’m not here to judge. Hopefully your getting my point. Consistency is key.
Branding is a consistent MESSAGE and THEME. Migos, Wiz Khalifa, Too Short, Nipsey Hussle, Mozzy, etc. they are always talking about the same things. When I feel like hearing some pimp s***, I know I can always count on Too Short or Suga Free. They never let me down… Lol. When I want to hear songs about smoking weed I can always listen to either Wiz Khalifa or Berner. See where i’m getting at? What can people expect to hear when they listen to your music?
Branding is one of the main reasons I keep reminding artist to mix and master their tracks professionally before letting people hear them. It sets you apart from everybody else that HASN’T gotten their music mixed and mastered. And that’s more than 90% of artist. They simply don’t know anything about sound quality, or are just too anxious to show the world what they came up with. So just by mixing and mastering your music alone, it will SOUND BETTER than most music being put out. How good it’s mixed plays a part in how much people will like your music. Music is all about how it makes people feel. When you understand how much sound quality plays a part in people feeling your music or not, you won’t just put out anything that doesn’t SOUND professional.
Separating yourself from everybody else that’s making music is important and will determine how successful you will be in your music career. Once you start developing a strong brand, people that don’t understand branding will wonder how your doing it. That’s when you can tell them, it’s all about brands!
